Banff & Lake Louise: The Complete Guide
Banff National Park is Canada's most visited national park — and for good reason. The combination of turquoise glacial lakes, snow-capped limestone peaks, abundant wildlife, hot springs, a sophisticated mountain town, and some of the world's most iconic natural scenery creates a destination of extraordinary appeal for travelers from every corner of the world.
Getting to Banff
Banff is 128km (80 miles) west of Calgary International Airport (YYC) via the Trans-Canada Highway. The drive takes approximately 90 minutes. Direct flights operate to YYC from London Heathrow, Tokyo Narita, Seoul Incheon, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Dubai, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and dozens of other international cities. GDtours provides private airport transfers from YYC to Banff year-round.
Lake Louise: Canada's Most Iconic View
Lake Louise is 57km northwest of the Town of Banff via Highway 1. The lake's intense turquoise colour — produced by glacial rock flour suspended in meltwater that refracts light in the blue-green spectrum — is entirely natural and extraordinary to witness in person. The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise sits at the water's edge. Canoe rentals are available from the Chateau boathouse (CA$145/hour).
Photography tip: The lake faces east-northeast — morning light illuminates the water and glacier beautifully. Arrive before 8am in July and August. GDtours operates 6am sunrise departures from Banff specifically for Lake Louise photography.
Moraine Lake: The Valley of the Ten Peaks
Located 14km south of Lake Louise Village, Moraine Lake is widely considered to produce the most spectacular natural view in Canada. The Valley of the Ten Peaks panorama is the image that appeared on the Canadian $20 bill for decades. The Rockpile Trail (a 400m walk) provides the classic panoramic viewpoint.
Access restrictions: Parks Canada restricts private vehicle access to Moraine Lake during peak season. GDtours is authorized to transport guests directly to Moraine Lake on private tours.
Banff Gondola
The Banff Gondola carries guests from the base of Sulphur Mountain (1,580m) to the summit ridge at 2,281m in 8 minutes. The summit features a 360-degree boardwalk and extraordinary views of six mountain ranges. Banff's famous hot springs are located at the gondola base — naturally heated mineral water at 37-40°C.
Johnston Canyon
Johnston Canyon is Banff's most accessible natural attraction — a narrow limestone canyon accessible via a suspended metal catwalk bolted into the canyon walls. The Lower Falls (1.4km, 20 minutes) are a dramatic 10-metre waterfall inside a grotto. The Upper Falls (3km, 1 hour) are a 30-metre cascade visible from a cave-like viewing platform.
Icefields Parkway (Highway 93 North)
The 233-kilometre Icefields Parkway between Lake Louise and Jasper is routinely cited as the world's most scenic drive. Key stops: Bow Lake, Peyto Lake Viewpoint, Saskatchewan River Crossing, the Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre, Athabasca Glacier walks, and Sunwapta Falls.
Wildlife in Banff
Elk are seen in the Town of Banff itself — hotel lawns, golf courses, and roadside meadows. Black bears and grizzly bears are reliably spotted from May through October along the Bow Valley Parkway. Bighorn sheep congregate at roadside mineral licks. Mountain goats appear on the Icefields Parkway above the treeline.
