Banff to Vancouver Drive: The Reverse-Direction Guide
The Banff to Vancouver drive is the same 847-kilometre Trans-Canada Highway 1 route as the Vancouver to Banff drive — only in reverse. Distance, drive time, and the major stops are identical. But driving west changes some practical considerations: the scenery reveals itself in a different order, the light conditions shift, and the overnight logic is slightly different depending on your travel context.
This guide is for travellers who are finishing a Banff or Rockies trip and driving back to Vancouver — or for those flying into Calgary and exiting via Vancouver.
Quick Reference — Banff to Vancouver
Distance: 847 km (526 miles) • Drive time non-stop: 9 to 9.5 hours • Recommended: 2 days minimum • Best overnight west: Revelstoke (5.5 hours from Banff, assuming Lake Louise stop)
The Route: Banff to Vancouver
Follow Trans-Canada Highway 1 West from Banff. The highway does not change number — follow Highway 1 West continuously until you reach Vancouver.
- Banff → Lake Louise: 58 km (45 minutes) — Stop at Lake Louise immediately. If you skipped it on the drive east, do not skip it now. Moraine Lake is 14 km from Lake Louise village.
- Lake Louise → Golden: 80 km (1 hour) — The Kicking Horse Canyon is dramatic going west as well. The Natural Bridge over the Kicking Horse River is a worthwhile 15-minute stop.
- Golden → Revelstoke: 148 km (1.5 hours) — Rogers Pass westbound. Same scenery, different light. Morning sun hits the Selkirk range dramatically from this direction in summer.
- Revelstoke → Kamloops: 210 km (2 hours) — Craigellachie Last Spike is 3 minutes north of the highway near Sicamous — worth the brief detour going either direction.
- Kamloops → Hope: 230 km (2.5 hours) — The Fraser Canyon going west reveals the canyon walls at different angles. Hell's Gate is worth stopping at regardless of direction.
- Hope → Vancouver: 154 km (1.5 hours) — The Fraser Valley opens up into farmland and then the Greater Vancouver suburbs. Traffic into Vancouver can be significant during rush hours (3–6pm) — consider arriving before 2pm or after 7pm.
Banff to Vancouver: What Changes Driving West?
The practical differences when driving Banff to Vancouver:
- You see Lake Louise first, not last. Stop here at the start of Day 1 before continuing west. Do not rush this stop.
- Rogers Pass is in the afternoon on Day 1 — the light is different. Afternoon clouds often build over the Selkirks; morning departures from Banff give you Rogers Pass in cleaner midday light.
- Vancouver traffic is the end, not the beginning. Plan your arrival to avoid the Coquihalla Summit in early morning (fog risk) and downtown Vancouver in rush hour.
- Flying into Calgary, driving to Vancouver: If you flew into Calgary International Airport (YYC) and are ending your trip in Vancouver, allow 90 minutes from YYC to Banff before starting the westbound drive.
